AEW Dynamite Cliff Notes 9-2-20

Guess they’re not Proud and Powerful anymore and I guess they don’t have rivalries that should be saved for PPVs. This was the hottest tag team in free agency and look where they are now, kicking off a regular show. At least they won the the match.

Private Party & SCU vs Young Bucks & Jurassic Express

Another random, useless match.Matt Jackson rips a sign from a fan and the Bucks are all business for this match. Private Party fail to get basic tag team stuff. A cool highly choreographed move should have finished the match but it just kept going and going. The moves always look pretty but there is rarely any story there. Faces vs faces is just silly when randomly done. Bucks win and walk away, not even shaking hands because they’re all business…

Interview with Kenny

Tony interviews Omega and I am glad Kenny wore the shirt he did but he could have at least looked like a damn wrestler while he was out there being interviewed, slacks and loafers won’t hurt him. FTR extends the olive branch during Kenny’s interview the  Omega proceeds to deliver a horrible promo. Page marks his way out to the ring while FTR rips him a new one. The red makeup on Page is way too much, we know he’s turning to the dark side but he doesn’t like like he’s about to slice open younglings. The fact that FTR had nothing to do with Page’s actions is bad storytelling and the segment was lost. Contrived garbage, no way FTR thinks this is better than WWE, they flubbed half of their lines and it felt so empty.

Jericho vs Janela

Cassidy and Hager had a pretty funny segment backstage. Jericho wanted Orange Cassidy to be ringside for his match. I don’t know why this match is happening, they have a random match generator in the back. Aubrey Edwards was front and center in every shot of this match, reminding me that this should not be a thing. Janela was squashed basically. Sonny Kiss makes the save then screams when Hager picks him up and slams him. At that point, Cassidy had enough and rushed the ring, which is exactly what Jericho wanted and why he invited him to watch the match; a beat down ensues.

All heels

I am a fan of the work of Tazz however he is just yelling at this point. I can’t take this act seriously anymore, absolute Ricky Starks is a goofy name and Cage just stands there. Jake the Snake and Archer interrupt followed by Eddie Kingston and it becomes heels vs heels. The segment was a mess, it fell apart, it just turned into a brawl which we all saw coming a mile away. Shawn Spears being there made zero sense because he’s not a big deal, he’s barely an afterthought at this point, half of the time I forget he’s on the roster. Inner circle wanted to get their shots in and commentary tries to put over the Battle Royale but it’s all just direction less slop. One thing I will say is that I like when top heels battle each other for supremacy, I like the idea of this angle but the execution is piss poor.

Thunder Rosa in action!

All of your top wrestling analysts are wrong, this match was BAD! I have no idea what people are talking about when they say this match was great. Serena Deeb and Rosa were very very slow and pretty sloppy. No reason for Deeb to get any offense in, it should have been a squash. If you wanted Rosa to struggle you should have saved Ford for this week instead of having her lose last week, Ford took Shida to her limits. Maybe Thunder Rosa was nervous? Doesn’t matter now, I don’t have high hopes for her match versus Shida if this match was supposed to be any indication of what we’re supposed to get at a $50 PPV. The division is so weak that they acknowledge other titles. Kenny didn’t get to show off his Triple A title, nor did the Lucha Bros show off theirs. It’s all just to build up AEW, they don’t give a shit about other promotions. An extended commercial break during her debut match didn’t help and it was way too long.

I fought the law(yer)

What a dreadful main event, can you imagine WWE doing this and the fans praising it?! Moxley toys with the guy far too long before ending it all, this should have been 5 minutes at the most. Wardlow and MJF attack Moxley and the blood was a cheap touch that Moxley and AEW couldn’t resist. Blood really is their cheap go to that they use far too often, Joey Janela was bleeding in this show earlier. Great way to end a go home show for a PPV, the main event match was bad but the final segment was a great visual although MJF has very little chance of winning.

Honorable mentions

1. A bunch of weird/questionable stuff said during the broadcast.

2. Excalibur is back on commentary. I guess what he said isn’t racist anymore.

3. Brodie Lee video package. His character has no definition, he’s all over the place, literally.

4. Britt Baker attacks Swole. Lockjaw was applied without a glove so Covid-19 gets ignored again.

Final take

I don’t know why most of what happy, happens  and that’s not how you tell stories. I wish things made sense and that they hired some people who knew the wrestling business because this show gets worse every week. I thought they had found their stride, guess I was wrong
