Ortiz vs Cody
Ortiz taps to the Figure Four leg lock, good of AEW not to always end matches with finishers.
The Elite come to Cody’s aid as the rest of the Inner Circle pop up on screen to reveal that they took out Nick Jackson. Brandi is unnecessary in her role at times, Arn is putting a paper over his mouth like an NFL coach and it’s all just too much. I didn’t really like this as an opening match but I understand its place on the card.
Bea Priestly & Nyla Rose [c] vs Kris Statlander & Hikaru Shida
Got a chance to hear Statlander’s music and it’s pretty good. A noble effort by 3 of the 4 competitors in the ring but bathroom break if I’d ever seen one. JR talking up Bea Priestly was ridiculous, she had done nothing but simple punches and kicks, when she tried actual moves she botched them badly.
Priestly attacks Nyla Rose after the match for no reason and the crowd has no idea why that happened at all. Shida is always a bright spot though, if Shida doesn’t win the title in her title opportunity then the clean win by Nyla in a tag match was foolish.
Jurassic Express vs MJF & Butcher & Blade
Lots of standing and waiting but good stuff for the crowd. The match was LOOOONG but was satisfying (to fans). The crowd was stunned as Aubrey Edwards committed a cardinal sin and screamed “kickout!” The audience tried to recover but never did, shortly after MJF won for his team.
Moral Orel
Britt Baker stinks it up with her terrible music and awful gimmick. As bad as things are with the booking of Britt Baker’s character, Big Swole’s involvement added some level of interest, the WWE references were kinda cool and pretty relevant but still a cheap attention grab and according to see fans they don’t watch WWE(and haven’t for YEARS) so they shouldn’t get those references anyway. Perhaps that’s what both characters needed, a meaningful feud that would elevate both talents.
Death Triangle vs Janela and Private Party
A picture in a picture commercial break that turns into a full commercial, I get it now, they are tricking us, not a fan. I don’t want to watch the commercials so I don’t want to stick around for them, I’m just going to skip the match next time.
The venom mask from Pentagon was dope while Private Party had their same match. I don’t think it’s just AEW and WWE, all wrestling is getting stale when it comes to their match layouts.
Death Triangle wins then puts their opponents in a triple submission called the Triangle of Death that looked pretty cool. Then Best Friends and OC save the day.
Hangman [c] & Dustin Rhodes vs Jericho & Guevara
Tony Schiavone interviews Hangman at the top of the show while the Young Bucks are standing there just so he can diss them. Later Hangman has his regular but good match and wins for his team after Dustin hit Sammy with a Destroyer. The Elite are beat up again Matt Jackson gets beat up with Hangman after telling him to fuckoff. No reason on Earth that should ever happen.
Honorable mentions
Christopher Daniels spoofs the Dark Order. A great video from a great in the game.
Darby Allin vignette was a great look for his character, maybe not a great look for network TV.
The backstage interviewer is so much worse than she should be. WWE usually fails in this department but AEW is leading that category right now.
Moxley sits down with JR.
Final take
As solid of a show as you’re going to get, production has stepped up a bit, while stories are developing. The company is finally starting to get comfortable in it’s own skin.
