Great idea to start with Cody it was either him or Moxley. I wish Cody was heel so that this could have a greater impact. It would have been a big deal for faces to bow to a heel for the greater good. Cody promoted Blood and Guts, definitely not a sexy name for a big event, I think the WWE reference is overused. It was said on a conference call 99.9 percent of fans never heard. The Elite are best friends so their comfort leveled with each other were comforting and reassuring as well as carrying a good opening segment. I really liked when the lights came on and the pyro hit, really speaks to the true movement, this is what AEW is and what it should be.

Jurassic Express vs Butcher and Blade

JR is such a distraction at times. The level of production matters and JR has fallen off a cliff like Tom Brady. The random yelling in the crowd was great stuff during this match as it was throughout the nice. Jurassic Express wins continuing their push, gaining momentum, strengthening the tag division with each outing.

Penelope Ford vs Statlander vs Riho vs Shida

The ref just letting Kip interfere is so unfair and it is lastly booking to be honest. I really didn’t understand the hyping of Penelope Ford on commentary. Also, the crowd couldn’t help the bad wrestling from Ford, Ford is just not good enough to be on television. Shida wins a sloppy match that would have been good without Ford and her involvement. Statlander and Riho suffered from being in this match, they suffered a loss and a loss incredibly as well.

Lucha Bros vs Best Friends

Fun match, the promo afterward had me hyped for an actual street fight but they reneged seconds later and said parking lot instead of streets. Chuck Taylor said they were actually going to fight on the streets and I was down, it was going to be the thing that got me into AEW wrestling as a fan. Shame, I wanted to see them fight on the streets, it was the first must see things I’ve heard since AEW’s inception.

The Exalted one

The promo from evil Uno set the stage for Christopher Daniels to challenge and deny the existence of the Exalted One only for the Exalted One to reveal himself. A fantastic video package reveals Brodie Lee has had his eye on AEW and that he is ready to take over. I feel like Brodie Lee, formerly Luke Harper, is doing the Bray Wyatt thing but that’s what he did in WWE, I liked all of that then and I like all of that now.

The promo from the Exalted One was great, it had a strong feel to it. I liked the sister Abigail fake out but I do hate the gear Brodie Lee was wearing. Also, the crowd should have been freaked out not clapping, MJF has to know when something is bigger than his character. Christopher Daniels was beat down to show the strength of the Dark Order.

Inner Circle vs Elite

Sammy was doing a great job singing Jericho’s theme, being Jericho’s number one fan. Jericho on commentary was great as always. JR and Jericho had some good moments to compliment a cool match, Inner Circle wins. Jericho bans fans and it’s greatness but while he taunts the Elite being a man down, one man shows up to DELETE those words from the former AEW Champion, that man was Broken Matt Hardy.

Honorable mentions

  1. Is there anything Brandi can stop doing? Seriously though she was great and does a pretty good job at most of what she does.

  2. JR taking a shot at people that comment about him commenting on Riho’s weight was pretty stupid. All he has to do is come up with more to say, that’s his job.

  3. Colt Cabana picks on Kip Sabian.

  4. Moxley segment was short, good and needed.

  5. Lance Archer has Jake Roberts speak for him. Lance Archer will likely lose his match against Cody whenever that is. Archer looks a bit generic for casuals though. The video package made Archer look much much better and they should have stuck to that instead of having him on the show.

  6. Matt Hardy debuts at the very end of the show and the crowd would have went ape shit.

Final take

Kudos to AEW for having some “essential personnel” fill in for the crowd is absolutely something WWE has to take from them. MJF was the MVP of the night along with his crew, Shawn Spears had a plate of takeout cheering on the competitors, he should have been a guy they showcased in this episode. The betting going on between Spears and MJF was good, solid story as to why they were there.

I like the stripped down version of AEW. My problem with the show and the biggest problem it has besides the booking, one can argue booking is the related, is that AEW is “like living beyond it’s means”. What I mean is that they are a smaller company and roster than they present themselves to be and if they just went with a more simple presentation like that of NXT it would look alot better and wouldn’t expose the holes in their production quality and lack of experience. It would also allow their booking to be a lot tighter, so stories won’t be rushed. Something between NXT and Raw would be great.
