Cody vs Darby Allin
Exactly the kind of good long match you need to start a show every week. Darby carried a lot of the action, showcasing what he can do, wrestling circles around Cody really. Brandi was taken out early but came back with some water which was a dumb spot. Darby kicked out of two Crossroads, making everyone believe he may be headed to the final round but come on now, you know that’s not happening. They certainly played Cody’s music before anyone knew he won. Commentary was still stuttering and stammering over their words and they were halfway through his music. Aubrey Edwards screwed that count up, she counted part Darby’s pin as Cody’s which is not something I actually remember seeing in all my years of watching wrestling. Just start the count over and let the wrestlers stay there until you’re done. Too much help from the peanut gallery, if the talent isn’t talented enough not to be told, “kick out!” in front of a national audience then they shouldn’t be in the professional wrestling business. Anyway, Cody is going to the finals, who would have guessed?
Musa vs Wardlow
Chi town takes another L, Musa tried it though.
Wardlow needs more polish, he should be a guy on every week picking up victories and credibility, as well as much needed television experience. Wardlow should have been in the TNT Championship tournament to gain cred and experience. Right now he looks the part but I don’t now what kind of match he can have against the other big men in the company.
This is gonna sting
The Scorpio Sky vignette makes me want to see more of Shawn Dean instead of him. I ain’t feeling him or the push, it seems contrived; sorry. If you wanted me to take him seriously then he should be in the TNT Championship tournament. The TNT Championship tournament is going to have to get an entire podcast dedicated to how poorly it was booked. Scorpio Sky lacks personality in-ring and that lack of personality reflects in his promos and his overall character and therefore makes him unbelievable. It’s weird to me because I like Scorpio Sky a lot and I think he should have been a solo act from the very first episode of Dynamite.
No DQ No countout
Best Friends vs Havok & Kip Sabian
The match was good and had a good ending sequence. There was a clunkiness to it all that looked really bad on television but had a certain charm to it. Best Friends win and continue their winning ways as a tag team.
Shawn Spears
Why is he winning? I’m not understanding why he’s racking up wins other than to wrestle Cody for the TNT title and finally beat him. The problem is that Shawn Spears isn’t the same wrestler he was at the end of his NXT run when he was absolutely on fire. Shawn Spears better find whatever it is he used to possess and harness it or all this is frivolous.
Marko Stunt vs Brodie Lee
It was a squash of course. I’m not sure why this match even took place, even the fan sitting next to me was scratching his head as to why this has to happen. A limited roster doesn’t mean that you get worse at booking, it means you have to get better. The Exalted One had better get some meaningful feuds and soon!
Honorable mentions
MJF vignette.
Bubbly Bunch segment is a little different this week and not bad.
Britt Baker vignette makes her look like a total heel, the way she should have always looked.
Final take
I just wasn’t that into this show, the wrestling was good, some might say really good but I wasn’t terribly impressed with any of it. I watched with my buddy who is an AEW fan and we agreed on quite a bit of the shows short comings. The show was still enjoyable, maintaining its focus unlike the shows they had before the pandemic.
