AEW Revolution 2021 Preview and Picks

Preshow

Riho and Thunder Rosa vs. Britt Baker and Rebel

This feels like a throwaway to me. It feels like they needed to add one more match and that they needed to do something to officially blow off the Thunder Rosa/Britt Baker program. If that is the case then I would have preferred a one-on-one match to settle the feud. Rhio and Rebel seem secondary at this point. The match should be fine but I’m not sure if this would hook a viewer that was on the fence about buying the show. Pick: Riho and Thunder Rosa

Main Show

Tag Team Casino Royale

We have another AEW Casino Royale match. These are hit or miss for me. Considering that this one will focus on the tag division, this one should be interesting. Speaking of the tag division, there are 15 teams in this thing. I’m expecting A LOT of high spots and moving parts. I’m not even going to try and keep up with what’s going on in the ring. I’m going to sit back and enjoy the chaos. Pick: Pac and Rey Fenix

Miro and Kip Sabian vs. Orange Cassidy and Chuck Taylor

I think I would have put this one on the preshow. It should be entertaining and it’d be out of the way. Since Miro’s arrival in AEW, a lot of people have been wondering when he would get a chance to make a statement. I think this is that chance. Miro needs to destroy The Best Friends. OC and Chuckie T are pretty much bulletproof and a loss does nothing to hinder their momentum. Pick: Miro and Kip Sabian

Face of the Revolution Ladder Match: Cody Rhodes vs. Scorpio Sky vs. Penta El Zero Miedo vs. Lance Archer vs. Max Caster vs. TBD

Much like the tag team Casino Royale, I’m expecting a lot of death-defying spots and genuine creativity. The unnamed competitor adds another dimension to this. It reminds me of when Brian Cage debuted. At this point, I’m not sure who the final entrant will be. I’m still leaning towards Ethan Page. I would love to see someone completely unexpected that really gets people talking but perhaps that moment will come later. I’m expecting great things from Penta and Lance. Scorpio Sky stands out to me, especially with his new heelish attitude. I think this may be his breakthrough match. Pick: Scorpio Sky

Adam Page vs. Matt Hardy

This whole program feels thrown together to me. It came out of nowhere. That being said, I have come around on this one. Page is a top-tier babyface for AEW and having him square off against the power-hungry Hardy really fits. I expect Big Money Matt to have Private Party and TH2 to protect his investment. I think all of these shenanigans will be counted by The Dark Order and I think this is the moment where the Page/Dark Order rom-com finally gets some closure. Pick: Adam Page

Sting and Darby Allin vs. Brian Cage and Ricky Starks

This is a street fight. I’m not sure if it’s going to be the traditional “walk and brawl” or a cinematic style match. Both are possible and both have their merits. This kind of environment will help to hide any limitations Sting may have and I’m all for that. This also gives Darby Allin a whole playground of stuff to jump off and do something crazy. This is a chance for AEW to do something truly creative. As much as I’d love for Team Taz to get the win here to be established as a threatening group, I think cashing in on the Sting nostalgia is the smart play. Pick: Sting and Darby Allin

AEW Tag Team Championship: The Young Bucks (Champions) vs. Chris Jericho and MJF

I admit that when Jericho and MJF won the right to challenge The Young Bucks, I was not sold on it. I also admit that up until recently, I had minimal interest in the match. The Bucks ping-ponging between heel and face can make things confusing, especially for those that don’t watch every week. That all changed during the go-home edition of Dynamite. The Jackson brothers firmly aligned as good guys, showing some fire, and trying to avenge their dad’s beatdown. This makes me want to see The Inner Circle get their comeuppance. On the other hand, I really want Jericho and MJF to have that nuclear heat moment. They have been hyping up Jericho’s tag team resume’ so much lately that a win wouldn’t shock me. Pick: Inner Circle

AEW Women’s Championship: Hikaru Shida (Champion) vs. Ryo Mizunami

Outside of the main event, this may be the match that I’m looking forward to the most. Shida and Mizunami have a ton of history and I am glad to see them have a large audience to showcase this. Mizunami could be a tremendous asset to AEW if she ever signed on to a full-time deal. She is so good at mixing comedy with brutality and that is not easy. As for Shida, she remains to be a force in the division and I wish there were crowds available to enjoy her reign. I could see Mizunami winning the title…just not here. Pick: Hikaru Shida

AEW World Championship: Kenny Omega (Champion) vs. Jon Moxley

I never thought I’d see a barbed wire landmine deathmatch on a mainstream wrestling show, let alone be the main event. I love it. Some can argue that stipulations like these cheapen the title but I disagree. There is an art to deathmatch wrestling and while, I’m not expecting Funk/Onita, This should be cool. This is the Moxley I’ve wanted to see since he left WWE. I’ve missed seeing what he could do. Kenny Omega is untested in a match like this and that intrigues me. We all know that Kenny can have a vicious streak but I want to know if he can take it to that next level. Moxley winning here makes sense with this being a match that is right up his alley but I think it’s too soon to have Omega lose. Pick: Kenny Omega
