Mia Yim vs LeRae

A double count out brought Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzalez out to do their worst to Mia Yim but Tegan Knox and Shotzi Blackheart stood in their way.

The interference from Johnny Gargano turned things into a mixed tag match that Gargano won by playing dirty. After the stolen victory, Gargano picked up the North American Championship, perhaps foreshadowing of things to come.

Tony Nese vs Swerve Scott

Tony Nese is back to being a heel, I liked him as a face, he fought hard and got the crowd behind him on his way to becoming Cruiserweight Champion. Swerve was out for blood. Swerve got the W and got out of the ring before Gentleman Jack could get to him. Jack Gallagher tried to distract Serve before Swerve pulled out the victory.

Burch & Lorcan vs UE vs Mystery team

Breezango is back! The entrances are always interesting, never a bad thing when wrestlers can be fun without being at the top of the card.

Breezango win the match to become number one contenders, perfect way to bring them back while protecting Lorcan and Burch who are the ones who will take the belts from Imperium.

Imperium came out and Malcolm Bivens showed up on the ramp with his tag team to show just how crowded the tag team division is becoming.

Santana Garrett vs Aliyah

Aliyah is someone everyone, including Robert Stone is interested in. Aliyah looks better in the ring every week, she’s been working hard, becoming pretty carriable. Aliyah would be good to have on SmackDown with Robert Stone but it seems she can’t get the necessary victories for any sort of momentum. Robert Stone continues to fail at his brand, finding minimal success in NXT so far.

Cameron Grimes vs Bronson Reed

Great to see Bronson Reed is back, he adds quite a bit of depth and energy to the roster. Reed dominated most of the match while being put over strong by commentary but failed to capitalize on the opportunity.

Karrion Kross appears to finish off Reed and send a message to Ciampa. Tik tok.

Fantasma vs Drake Maverick

The finals of the Interim Cruiserweight Championship tournament is easily a main event at a Takeover but sense Takeovers are usually loaded anyway, we got the match as a main event on this episode of NXT. Drake Maverick, in a spastic interview, said that he was ready for anything and that he had nothing to lose. Turns out he had everything to gain. I thought things were gonna be played too safe until Fantasma powerbombed Maverick on the floor.

The booking was superb. El Hijo del Fantasma wins the Cruiserweight title due to the distraction of the masked luchas. Drake pulls the camera in close and says thank you to everyone at home, Maverick’s WWE career has come to an end; a great way to book it. Break their hearts and whenever you resign him there will be a huge pop for him and right on time Triple H comes to the stage and hands Maverick a contract and I gotta say, I believe that that may have been a real moment.

Honorable mentions

  1. Dexter Lumis channels his inner Bob Ross.

  2. Adam Cole hangs out with the UE while the Dream roller blades down memory lane.

Final take

Takeover is set and the stakes are high. I’m looking forward to everything NXT has built and how it will all play out. Sunday is a new night for Takeover so the In Your House theme better be dope; I think it will. Championships and reputations on the line, stars will be born and rivalries will die. We may even see some roster changes after this big event. Riddle has already kept to SmackDown, perhaps there are more call-ups to come.
