And now here are your announcements
Two night Takeover
I don’t like the idea, seems like too much. Takeovers are special because they don’t happen all the time, a 2 night event seems to undermine all of that.
Second announcement
Women’s tag team titles! Now NXT feels more like a complete show, seems like the only thing they need is a women’s secondary championship.
Candace Le Rae couldn’t help but actually be happy and break kayfabe. Good thing the champs went straight into their heel characters.
Io Shirai[c] vs Toni Storm
Io retains. The match was good, Toni Storm had a new look, thought she might take the title. I don’t know where Storm goes from here, I’d like to see her on SmackDown, there’s nothing else for her to do in NXT. Io needs fresh opponents, she has had a good reign and good matches but there needs to be a shakeup.
Pete Dunne vs Jake Atlas
Good match for Atlas. Even in a loss Atlas looked strong. Atlas should be given more opportunity, a little more investment into character development and he could be a Cruiserweight Champion. Dunne issues a challenge I think Timothy Thatcher will answer.
Women’s tag team title on the line
Dakota Kai[c] & Raquel Gonzalez[c] vs Ember & Shotzi
The picture in picture commercial break largely took me out of the match. I got back into when the commercial was done. The match really picked up. Good stuff from Gonzalez and Ember. I strongly disagree with the result of the match though, why beat champions you just crowned that night?! You could save the title change for the 2 night Takeover if you really wanted to do it. On the plus side, Ember and Shotzi having titles isnt a negative thing.
Xia Li vs Kayden Carter
Things were looking bad for Kayden then Kacy Catanzaro used her crutch on Xia for the DQ. Boa was about to take care of the matter but was saved by Kayden with the other crutch.
Legado vs Grizzled Young Veterans
MSK attack GYV dressed as Breezango causing them to lose. Breezango take out Legado. I think we will get some sort of Fatal 5 Way match for the tag titles at Takeover. The division is stacked and there are some deserving teams that can make a good run. MSK still have a title opportunity but that can easily be a throw away match to continue or start a feud. I’m thinking Grizzled Young Veterans win or maybe even Legado. That’s way MSK has to chase for a while, sorta like DIY.
Adam Cole vs Finn Balor[c]
Cole and Balor got to say their peace before the match. Excellent match, fantastic story for a man event. Finn Balor took everything Adam had and came out the victor. Kyle O’Reilly shows up to distract Cole and gets some revenge after the match. The show ends with Karrion Kross standing behind Balor as Balor ask,”what took you so long?” That is what the best show in wrestling the world looks like when it is firing on all cylinders.
Honorable mentions
I really wanted NXT to move nights to Tuesdays.
La Knight is assaulted by Bronson Reed
Imperium promo, they want to add to their ranks. Ciampa wants to take out Imperium for calling them out.
Leon Ruff promo, sounded okay but a lil forced.
The Way have a mini segment.
Jordan Devlin wants a change of scenery.
Zoe Stark vignette.
Io calls out Raquel Gonzalez to her face backstage, challenging her.
Final take
Big show; felt like a big deal with even bigger news. So many developments it’s hard to keep up with what they got going on. Title pictures are going to change drastically between now and Takeover so there is still sooo much that is yet to be determined. Next week is going to be a very big night for in-ring wrestling.
