Dakota Kai vs Mercedes Martinez
NXT knows it has the best women’s division in the world so they stand on that. This opening match did not disappoint. The best Kai has looked in a while in terms singles competition. Gonzalez interferes and I have no idea why they had the match be so competitive. Gonzalez was ruthless, bashing and throwing Martinez all over the place, this would set the tone for the night.
A Storm is brewing
Toni Storm sent a message to Zoe Stark before the match. Stark comes out and the jobber beats Toni because she was distracted. That’s bad booking, really bad booking from NXT. Toni Storm is guaranteed money, no reason to have her lose to nobodies at any point. It seems as if they are going to push the person that beat Storm but I smell another Leon Ruff situation. This doesn’t endear me to anyone, just makes me mad that Storm is not being booked in a meaningful way. I see where they are going with this but this loss was out of nowhere and could have been built differently.
Reed vs Theory
Still not a big fan of the stupid love story between Hartwell and Lumis. Just have them be a couple or whatever, don’t have it be part of matches. Reed wins because of Indi and Lumis accidentally interfering. Put the belt on Reed and put the tag belts on Indi and Candace, build this faction up that way, tell that story.
Dain & Maverick vs Imperium
Trust is a fragile thing, looks as if Maverick and Dain need to work on their bond as a tag team. Beautiful storytelling in this match. Dain did his best to jump the hurdle that is Imperium but miscommunication and old led to defeat. Imperium continue their recruiting process, picking up victories along the way.
Kamea & Aliyah vs Moon[c] & Shotzi[c]
Indi and Candace attack the champs before the match and somehow the Robert Stone brand number one contenders. A weird segment that ended weird and abruptly. I don’t really know what happened or what they were trying to accomplish.
Cole world
Really cool interview from ESPN and Sports Illustrated. Adam Cole is a star, he carries himself like one and this interview put his starpower into perspective. The reveal that O’Reilly watching the entire interview in a secluded area took the story to a new place, I like where all of this is going. Also, it seems like Cole is definitely being called up soon.
6man tag
Legado vs Kushida[c] & MSK[c]
Action packed from bell to bell. The tag team division has picked up. Legado would make great champs so I look forward to that. MSK proves that you can have a high octane offensive style while telling a damn good story (unlike other promotions…) Legado get a big win, standing tall.
Wilde looks like a young Oscar De La Hoya and it’s funny so I included it on this report haha.
Honorable mentions
Cameron Grime goes jewelry shopping, Ted Dibiase finally shows up to harass Grimes.
Dexter Lumis seemingly sends flowers to the tag champs and Frankie Monet instigates.
GYV in-ring promo, Thatcher and Ciampa come out to have a word.
Xia Li promo for Tian Sha.
Swerve promo was dope, I love the studio setting.
LA Knight promo, Ever-Rise get some personality.
Balor returns next week.
Pete Dunne promo.
Final take
Lots of story, lots of setup, good action. NXT delivers this ever week. This week was a ton of promo work and vignettes though. In-ring action will always be elite. The next Takeover is going to be as good as the old ones.
