The New Universal Champion starts the show and immediately elevates all he was feuding with unlike “thee guy”. Shinsuke Nakamura finally comes out and does a promo on his own and calls Strowman out for losing the IC title. This is a big deal. I remember saying how important this midcard was and how good they are, this is why, when the chips are down this midcard is more than capable of rising to the occasion.
Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross [c] vs Kabuki Warriors
This time Nikki Cross gets the pin and really is the MVP of the match. There wasn’t much Alexa Bliss in this match. The less of her, the better so the match is a little more watchable. I’m not sure what’s going to happen to Kabuki Warriors but losing to a team with Bliss on it will certainly seem like a burial to some fans. I think Kairi Sane is going to become a babyface again so that she can be fodder for Shayna Baszler.
Dolph better tuck it in
I fucking love the look of Sonya and Dolph, Dolph Ziggler is the absolute best partner in wrestling history, there is literally no one that he doesn’t look good with. Tucker shows Dolph some pictures before losing to him, maybe the extra motivation was unnecessary. I like where things are right now and if Don’t DeVille sticks by Dolph’s side then I’m all in on the two acts.
Dirt sheet
The Dirt Sheet delivers good news and let’s us know what happened at Wrestlemania. This segment is good but it’s missing something and it’s actually not the crowd. I can’t put my finger on it but this segment is a tweak away from being the best part of the entire show. Usos interrupt the performance from Miz and Morrison and then the New Day interrupted them. Long story short, next week the other halfs of the tag teams will face each other for the titles as Kofi, Jimmy and Morrison did at Wrestlemania.
Forgotten no more
A nice addition to the SmackDown roster, I would have put them on Raw where they are a better fit though. Lucha House Party were the first of many victims. They will feud with Roman Reigns and form some sort of group with Baron Corbin, could be the best move for them at the moment.
Who’s the boss?
Sasha and Bayley speak about overcoming the odds when Tamina takes her shot at the champ for the SmackDown women’s title. Sasha’s body language and facial expressions are among the best I’m the business. Bayley continues to be a coward and nominates Sasha to face Tamina and if Tamina wins she gets a title shot. Bayley has been bossy and a split has been teased but who knows if/when such a thing will happen.
Braun [c] vs Shin
Braun has stepped it up in the ring since being in a program with the Artist Collective. This is good for all parties involved. Cesaro may get a Universal title opportunity in the middle of this heated feud. Cesaro deserves at least a shot. Braun also deserves his spot. But you know who else deserves his spot? Bray Wyatt. Speaking of, Bray stops by to congratulate Braun Strowman on his Championship victory. Bray Wyatt wants the Universal Championship back and drops a Bill Cosby line on Braun “I brought you in this world and I’ll take you out!”
Honorable mentions
Elias speaks from the balcony.
Sheamus squashes jobber Cal Bloom.
Jeff Hardy is celebrated in the first part of a miniseries about his career. I feel like they just did this last year.
Final take
Not very newsworthy but not a bad show by any means. Next week is going to be a pretty big show. The ending was quite good with a twist ending. SmackDown is better than I have it credit for, it is still pretty basic but the execution at Wrestlemania was brilliant so I’m back on board…for now.
