By the numbers:

AEW: 906,000

NXT: 718,000

Good numbers for a post PPV show for AEW but lower than they’ve had before I believe. Unless it’s cracking a million viewers consistently I don’t think these numbers reatmatter to anyone ever right now. In about 4 years both shows will be up for renewal so that’s when networks will be paying attention. Right now they are cool niche products to feature and the “war” is a good talking point.

Tag team division:

AEW

Dark Order is coming on strong, SCU is relevant, Best Friends are the front runners for the titles and Lucha Brothers are crawling back into the picture. The tag division is the best thing going in AEW, the company getting back to it’s strong suit is exactly what AEW needs right now.

NXT

Not to be outdone, Grizzled Young Veterans and Forgotten Sons are making a name for themselves. I do believe that the Broserweights will have a short title run and drop the titles to Grizzled Young Veterans at the next Takeover.

Women’s division

AEW

Women’s matches don’t have to make it to every show and this is solid evidence for that. Why did Big Swole win this week but lose a fatal 4 way? The booking is ass backwards.

NXT

Very disappointed Shotzi lost but honestly that’s how her story is going to be told, she needs more seasoning any way, she’s too Indy and her timing is off for television matches. The division is stacked with competition though, too much competition to feature on just one show, NXT’s women’s division could use their own show on the network at this point, just a 30minute show with a match or two and promos.

Promos/vignettes

AEW

Cody continues to grandstand even when Jake “the Snake” Roberts is tearing him down. MJF does clean vignettes, keep them coming!

NXT

Balor is after Imperium, a very fresh and necessary rivalry.

Honorable mentions

  1. The Inner Circle is looking to become a more serious group.

  2. Velveteen Dream will be champ on mania weekend.

Final take

Both shows were enjoyable this week, AEW is doing a much better job of building their main stories but struggle mightily to make the entire show cohesive. NXT’s two cage matches didn’t do a damn thing for the ratings, not a good sign in terms of star power. Velveteen Dream in the main event should have a greater impact on things, I want to see NXT make someone a huge star instead of most people being on equal footing.
